Pence Pals Grants and a New Ipad too!!!

Thank you does not even cover how much our parent group means to us in Kindergarten. This week was an early Christmas. Thanks in part to all of the fund raising that our families have done, we were able to get 2 sets of nonfiction level 1 and sight word readers for our kids to use! Can you spot the readers? They are everywhere! Also we were able to receive an Ipad2 for our classroom use! This is exciting, the kids will work on learning responsibility and technology. This teacher will learn how to add more to the lessons and daily practice we do already! If you see a Pence Pal give them a big Thank you!!!

Mimio Teach comes to KS

Our classroom has had the privilege of recieving a mimio teach system. Our dry erase board is now an interactive whiteboard or a big computer screen! We have used it to graph our favorite colors this past week! We have also used it during math centers to play the Monster Squeeze game where each child has to guess the mystery number. It has been a great technology addition to our classroom and I am adding more and more technology to our daily learning each week. We have also added the weekly use of razkids.com. If you tried to use this over break, the password was not working, however the issues were taken care of! Please visit my class site in razkids, if you misplaced your password send me an email! The kids are able to access leveled readers to practice our strategies. We are moving right along into Quarter 2! Have a great weekend!

Apple Sauce and Apple Investigations

Last week Kindergarten at Pence learned about the history of apples through Johnny Appleseed. We investigated apples, and we used our 5 senses to explore and observe. We also made apple sauce in Ms. Rauenbuehler's room and we taste tested 3 kinds of apples in Mrs. Ryan's room. If you visit our school, notice our picture graph in the hallway, and enjoy the poem! Here are some pics from our classroom, Apple Investigations. More pics to come!

Dandelion Dilemma

Most people think those beautiful yellow flowers are weeds, but the kids always seem to bring them to me as gifts anyway. Today we used our math tools to circle a part of the playground and count the number of dandelions in our circle. Then inside the kids had to figure out the number of leaves on each plant if their plant each had 3 leaves. The process is amazing, as some of them were trying to multiply and the details of their pictures really illustrated to me where the kids are at when we look at their number understanding. What a great day too, as the wind blew a little later they noticed the seeds were being carried away to another location just to spread out and grow more weeds!

What is in a name?

Our cool project for the week was our lesson in Everyday Math, the number name bracelets. Imagine you can find a collection of those colorful pony beads at a garage sale for a quarter and your class can turn them into the most beautiful thing ever! They were fun to make and aside from that our kids really started to think about all the groups that you can use to make a number. They choose either to make a set of 8, 9, 10, or 11. Then they added their beads and we helped to twist them into magnificent jewelry. Next we drew all the different number groups to show our number. This is where the name comes in. A number has many names, you can demonstrate it's value by using craft sticks, pictures, money, tens and ones, beads, tally marks and even number sentences. This was a great way to explore the name of a number by using groups. I was able to see that most of us are on our way to understanding how to break apart and put together a number. On the list next: addition and subtraction!!!

3-D Shape Exploration

Kindergarten has been working on 3-D shapes, did you know they are fat no flat?
We have a great poem to go with our learning. To review this week we explored making our own shapes using marshmallows and toothpicks. We read a story Picture Pie by Ed Emberley and the kids want to add an art center next week where they use the ideas of taking shapes and cutting them and making new pictures from the shapes. We could really use some patterned paper if anyone has extra scrapbook paper at home!

See our cool 3-D shapes that we ate when we were done!

Time flies when you are busy and having fun!

Well, the end of quarter 3 is here. We are going to celebrate with a field trip to Jefferson County Park Tuesday March 20! Our first full day trip and we need to pack our lunch! It is the best day ever!!!

We have had some great activities lately in our math, time, money, and measuring are current themes.
Also another favorite, thank you Mrs. Ryan, was the survey lesson we did. I modeled how to ask a question with a yes or no answer. Do you like______? Then each child was able to ask their friends their question. We tallied the answers and graphed the responses! See pictures of our fun! My favorite question? Do you like school?

100 Days of School!

On Monday, Kindergarten students will be celebrating 100 days of school. We are planning a day of counting to 100!
Parents will be sending in a small snack to add to our 100's day snack mix and each child will have a chance to enjoy a great mix!

100 fruit loops will adorn our necks after we count the cereal into 10 piles of 10!

Fabulous crowns will adorn our heads and we will be writing about 100 things we would eat!

Stay tuned for pictures of our fun celebration!

Ms. Rauenbuehler has joined our class and is slowing taking over teaching periods in our day! She will be here through March 2 and so you will be able to meet her at conferences in Feb.

Just a few important reminders:
Are you putting your kids to bed so they get enough sleep?
Do you ask your child how many cubes they kept and what happens if they tell you they lost a cube?
These are the dreary days of winter and our behavior has been showing through. Talking to your child after school will also help them learn to make good choices at school!
Please contact us if you have any questions!

Happy Friday!

Shapes in Action

This week in our classroom we worked on reviewing shapes and learning new ways to use them. The kids brainstormed different ways we can create shapes and then tried out several ways.
We used wiki sticks, paper and pencil, scissors, hands and our bodies. Our plans were put on paper and then we tried them out!

No School Monday Jan. 16th, I will be finishing up report cards, look for them to come home at the end of the week! I am very proud of the kids this quarter! We have made big gains!

Please keep checking your child's orange folder, poetry homework will be coming weekly as well as the School-Home link!

Ms. Rauenbuehler has enjoyed her first week here and looks forward to taking over a few more things next week! We are so excited to have a new face in our room!
Have a great weekend!
