Apples Apples Apples!

The kindergarten classes at Pence Elementary spent this past week in a project centering on apples! Thank you to all parents who donated apples or time for us! We were able to make applesauce and talk about measuring ingredients.  We had a yummy snack and learned all about Johnny Appleseed!
Here are some of our pictures!

Guided Drawing: Pete the Cat

Kindergarten recently read Pete the Cat, as seen on last week's blog! This week we brainstormed using concept maps to see what else Pete the Cat could step in to turn his shoes a different color!

 Concept Map to brainstorm ideas!

We also wanted to draw Pete so I used simple shapes to create a guided drawing of Pete the Cat. Especially at the beginning of the year I always hear, "but I can't draw that". I try to describe how to draw using shapes. For Pete's body we drew an oval, then a circle for a head. Next we used pointed mountains to make ears. We added rectangle legs, oval shoes, a long curly tail and the kids added eyes and a nose and a mouth! It was a success!

Pete the Cat will visit Kindergarten!

Each year my coworkers and I look for new and exciting books to share with our classes! Last year we discovered Pete the Cat I Love My White Shoes by Eric Litwin. This summer we were excited to discover he had written another book entitled Pete the Cat Rocking in My School Shoes. Both books have musical downloads and many video clips on youtube.com. Watch Pete Here!!!

Next week Pete will visit Kindergarten and we will begin working on color words! The book helps get the class excited to learn how to read words that are very common in their worlds!
Many of the take home books we have ready to use are perfect for reading and using to fill in those September reading calendars!

Please help our class by ordering books by Sept. 19 online!

Classroom Centers and New Arrangements!

Calendar and Morning Meeting Area!

 Tables and Supply Cubbies!

 Classroom Library!

 Housekeeping Center and Doll House!

Teacher's Table and Computer/Listening Center!

There are new things going in kindergarten. I took the time this summer to clean out and relocate some of my centers. The old arrangement just wasn't working. Now that we have almost completed our first full week together I think it is working!!! The kids are settling in to our routines and we are learning about each other.
We have also collected lots of family scrapbook pages and I will post more about those next week when we have them all up in our room. Star student will begin next Tuesday and I can't wait for the kids to share about their pages during sharing time. This was a new idea for me as a way to get to know the families in our classroom! So far I have loved looking at the pages... I will post some pictures next week!
